Adiponectin
Adiponectin, also called APM1, is a hormone found in the human body. It is secreted by adipose tissue. Adiponectin is classified as a peptide hormone.
Secretion and Production
Adiponectin is produced in and secreted from adipose tissue. It is a 244-amino-acid long polypeptide, and its structure and functions are still being researched. Because its complexity, scientists do not know the full function of the adiponectin hormone.
However, some of its known effects include control of metabolic processes, insulin resistance and sensitivity, glucose transport, and lipid breakdown. Levels of adiponectin are lower in diabetics than in non-diabetics and higher in people of average weight than people who suffer with obesity.
There is not yet an adiponectin supplement in development as scientists are still studying its structure and function. However, it is believed that an adiponectin supplement might have a pharmacological use in the areas of diabetes and weight control.
